His loud voice can often be heard from miles away, and his cheerful banter and playful jests have a way of brightening the mood and making everyone chuckle. Sugu is also a multilingual marvel whose Mandarin-speaking skills leave every newcomer in awe. It all started back in his school days in Malaysia, where he studied Chinese. Fast forward to today, and his fluency in the language would outshines even the native Chinese speakers within the company.
Can you share more about your career journey?
At the age of 18, I left my family and friends in Pahang and embarked on my career as an Abattoir worker in Singapore. Yet, after a decade, I opted for a career shift, moving into the printing industry and eventually finding my place in warehousing at Freshening. I have been with Freshening since 2018.
What is a typical day like at work?
I reside in Skudai, Malaysia, and my day kicks off at the crack of dawn, around 4am, as I begin my daily commute to work. My workday commences with the preparation of delivery cartons, followed by the organization of cartons within the warehouse. My day ends after the receipt of all scheduled deliveries.
I usually reach home past 9pm. Despite the long hours and tiring journey, I work hard to support my wife and two children back at home.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I value the company’s culture, which is structured but tight-knit. My proficiency in Mandarin has facilitated new friendships, adding a sense of camaraderie to the workplace. One fond memory would be last year’s Dinner & Dance event where I dressed up as a Kopitiam Uncle, and it brought laughter to everyone. I am glad to be able to do that!
