Launching a private label wet wipes range does not always mean developing a product from the ground up. One of the first decisions is whether to start with an existing formulation or create a custom one for your brand.
Both approaches can work. The right choice depends on what you want the product to do, how distinct it needs to be, your target market and your launch timeline.
What is an existing formulation?
An existing formulation is one a wet wipes manufacturer has already developed. It may be used in an established product or serve as a starting point for private label clients. Depending on the product, there may still be choices to make about the wipe material, fragrance, sheet count and packaging.
This approach can be useful when you want to enter a familiar category, such as baby wipes, personal care wipes or surface wipes, without beginning every stage of formulation development from zero.
At Freshening, our house brands and private label work have given us a wide portfolio of products across different uses and formats. Clients can explore established options, then discuss which aspects can be adapted to suit their brand.
When might an existing formulation be the better fit?
Consider it if:
- You have a clear target customer but do not need a novel formulation.
- You want to assess samples before committing to extensive development.
- Speed to market is an important consideration.
- An established product already meets most of your intended requirements.
An existing formulation can provide a more defined starting point. It does not mean that every change is automatically covered by previous testing. Ask the manufacturer which reports apply to the proposed product and whether changes to its formulation, material, packaging or claims require further evaluation.
What is custom formulation development?
Custom development begins with a more specific product brief. Your brand may want a particular sensory experience, ingredient profile, application or combination of features that is not available in an existing product.
The wet wipes manufacturer then works with you to develop and evaluate a formulation against those requirements. This process may involve several sample rounds, adjustments to the wipe material and packaging, and testing appropriate to the finished product and its intended claims.
Freshening’s in-house R&D team supports this work alongside our design and wet wipes manufacturing teams. Bringing these functions together helps clients assess the product as a whole: how the formulation works with the sheet, how the wipes dispense, and how the packaging protects the contents throughout their shelf life.
When might custom development be the better fit?
It may be appropriate if:
- You have a distinct product concept or intended use.
- You need to meet detailed brand or customer requirements.
- You want to differentiate the product through its formulation or user experience.
- Your target market calls for specific documentation, testing or product characteristics.
Customisation creates more possibilities, but it also requires clear decisions. A useful brief should identify the intended user, where and how the wipe will be used, the markets where it will be sold, preferred packaging, desired claims and target price range.
Consider the entire wipe, not just its liquid formulation
Whether you select an existing formulation or develop a new one, the liquid is only part of the finished product. The sheet and packaging affect how the wipe feels and performs.
For example, a larger body wipe calls for different considerations from an individually wrapped hand wipe. Sheet texture and strength matter to the user, while packaging affects dispensing, portability and moisture retention.
Freshening’s Experience Gallery gives private label clients an opportunity to compare wipe materials, packaging formats and finishes in person. Seeing and handling samples can make it easier to turn a written brief into a product decision.
What about existing test reports?
A manufacturer with established products may already have test reports relevant to a formulation you are considering. This can help you understand its documented performance and plan the next stages of development.
The key question is what, exactly, was tested. A report for one formulation or finished pack should not be assumed to substantiate a different ingredient combination, packaging format or marketing claim. Testing needs also vary by product category and destination market.
Before approving your private label wet wipes, ask:
- Which reports relate to the formulation or product we have selected?
- Do they cover the claims we intend to make?
- Will our proposed changes require additional testing?
- What documentation will we need for the markets where we plan to sell?
Freshening can review the available documentation with clients and identify testing needs for the proposed product. Applicable products are tested in accordance with relevant European standards; such testing should be described accurately and should not be presented as a blanket certification of every product.
How do you make the decision?
A practical way to begin is to evaluate an established product against your brief. If it already meets your needs, it may offer an efficient route to launch. If there are important gaps, those gaps become a clearer starting point for custom development.
There is no universal answer. The strongest private label product is the one that meets a real customer need, supports the claims you want to make and can be produced consistently at a viable cost.
Develop your private label wet wipes with Freshening
With more than 30 years of experience, our own house brands, in-house R&D and design teams, and manufacturing facilities in Singapore, China and Indonesia, Freshening can support both approaches. We can help you assess an established product or work through a more customised development brief, then consider the testing, packaging and production needs of your chosen market.
If you are looking for a private label wet wipes manufacturer, tell us what you want the wipe to do and who it is for. That is the best place to start deciding whether an existing formulation or a custom product will serve your brand better.
